A Poppin’ Good Time

In this episode, Chris’s mic pops. A lot. Then we talk about the rave reviews of the Triumph Tiger 800 family, and James tells Chris how wrong he is about the apparent and rumored new Trophy. Chris fights back with more mic pops to no avail; he ends up on the ropes. Fortunately, the guys are distracted by a voice mail and some email feedback, and the whole mess is rescued when Swingset drops by to talk about his new Dual Sport Podcast and why you should never hang around a certain type of person or two, and why you shouldn’t ride your dual sport motorcycle to a children’s playground. Or something like that.

Ok, busy week. I’m gonna break this down quickly. We rant, speculate wildly, make fun of of that guy from Full House and then we rant some more. We’ve also included the rest of our chat with Prubert and we have a top 10 list from Doug at the Tilted Horizons blog.

  • Joe Rocket Atomic 4.0 all-season jacket. This is proving to be a very versatile, well-designed all-season jacket.
  • Garage door opener with remote. Seems such a simple thing, but can really make the end of a ride a “welcome home” kind of thing.
  • TIRES! Find out what tires and sizes your loved one uses and order a spare set to keep on hand.
  • Amazon Kindle for off-bike reading on the road
  • Garmin Zumo (or similar) GPS with Bluetooth and MP3. I use this for audio entertainment, GPS (of course) and for screening incoming calls before deciding to pull over and talk or return the call. It’s been a great piece of gear.
  • Fold up bike trailer, inexpensive ones from Harbor Freight, or more upscale units from Kendon, etc.. If your loved one does track days or likes the idea of taking a bike along on family trips, this could make all the difference.

During episode 43 we talk with Jeff and Todd of the MotoTour 2010 group. Jeff & Todd are planning a 30 day cross country tour of the US, leaving in just a few weeks. We talk quite a bit about the bike preparation, trip planning and the thought processes that all come together while planning this type of a trip. We touch on some of the camping discussion and preparation, but we will invite Jeff & Todd back to discuss moto-camping in greater depth on a later show. There’s a lot there to cover.

After the interview, Jeff & Todd sit in on an abbreviated news segment where we admit how wrong we were about the Yamaha Super Tenere. The FZ8 is officially announced for the US market and that’s good news! While we’re talking about bikes, we vamp on the new rumored Kawasaki W800 and the upcoming Triumph WhateverTheyllCallIt. It’s got a steel frame! Oh and we mention that Ducati is pulling out of WSBK with their factory team, focusing instead on product development and ongoing innovation. We speculate this is a 2-year move, so fret not. We’re never wron… oh wait.

We know secrets are difficult to keep, but we’ll trust you with ours…

Adventure bikes have to carry out a whole range of roles with minimum fuss. That’s why Triumph has been busy ensuring its latest pair of young cubs will set a new standard when they’re introduced later this year.

We think a triple is the best configuration for an adventure bike. It’s compact and has a natural character that ideally suits a wide range of duties. Our long stroke engine will deliver smooth, controllable torque for both tricky off-road riding and the urban jungle…but with the higher rpm characteristics that just devour on-road miles.

A triple is also more refined than a twin, which means that the bike is less tiring and less intrusive on the open road. So you can just relax and enjoy the trip.

This week we are joined by our friend Nagi. Nagi is from India and has spent the last 10 years in the United States. We discuss the differences between being a motorcyclist in the USA and being a motorist in India. Nagi helps us understand how 2-wheeled travel is just a way of life in India, vs. the apparent “toy” or recreational nature of motorcycling in the USA.

Nagi also points out the differences in long-term ownership here and abroad, and how small-displacement engines are the norm in India, compared to the big, powerful machines we typically see here in the US. Before moving to America, Nagi rode bikes typically in the 125cc range, whereas here in America, Nagi is riding a Suzuki GSXR750 and a Honda Shadow VLX 600.

  • As reported on MotorcycleUsa.com – “BMW announced the news on Monday, January 11, touting sales data from the Motorcycle Industry Council. According to BMW (MIC annual report not yet available for confirmation), the US motorcycle market dropped 41%, to the tune of almost 360,000 unit sales lost. BMW sales dipped 22%, “which was the smallest decline among all motorcycle brands.”
  • As reported by BMW - “Our dedicated dealers were the key to our success this past year,” continued Andersen in the press announcement. “Despite the tough market, they continued serve our customers well and promote our new products like the K1300S and the K1300GT. They were supported by attractive financing programs from BMW Financial Services. While many other dealers struggled to finance their customers’ purchases, BMW dealers never lost access to good financing, and this will continue for 2010.”
