We’ve got news… Lots and lots of…

Ok, that’s just a flat out lie. There’s really not much news, but what we do have is exciting. First, gear for kids! Bilt, Cycle Gear’s house brand, has a full line of gear for kids. Everything from classic Fonzie leather to high-tech textile 4-season gear. Check it out. Also from the “hey, this is pretty cool” files, sales of the Japanese big-four are up. While the numbers we have reflect Japanese domestic sales, anecdotally, this trend seems to be strong here in the USA, too. Also, looking for tires? Avon has a nice rebate on a few popular models[1].

This week we talk about the (apparently?) finalized Audi-Ducati deal. Chris is convinced the status-quo will continue being all quoey, while James thinks there’s going to be some change. Good? Bad? Time will tell. I don’t think the guys need to enter a to-the-death cage match to prove who’s right. Probably for the best. We don’t have any mops around the Pace studios to clean up the mess.

Ryca gets right on with documenting the new street tracker build and it’s shaping up nicely! Check it out. Also, it’s like zip car for scooters. Good idea? Only San Francisco will know for sure. We have high hopes for this venture, and maybe this could set a trend for the future.

WARNING: We spend lots of time talking about electrics this week. Mostly because that’s where the interesting stuff is happening right now. But don’t despair! I’m sure we’ll have lots of good old fashioned gas burnin’ bikes to talk about next week.

We also spend some time on a tiny little scooter, yet another Triumph rumor and lots of email.

Oh, do you remember Colorforms? Those sticky plastic things in the shape of a pair of shoes or a shirt or something that you would stick on other sticky plastic things in the shape of a person or maybe a tree? Harley Davidson has given us online Colorforms! You can stick a bunch of accessories and stuff on a Sportster to see what it looks like. The difference is that you can peel your H-D creation off of the refrigerator door and bring it in to the real world if your wallet is fat enough.

This is the Sportster I would build from the available options. Probably not a big surprise. It’s basically a 48 with luggage and a real fuel tank.

This week, James and Chris discuss brands… Toyota, Pepsi & Coke, IBM, Cisco… oh, and Harley-Davidson, too. What’s the value of a brand? You’re guaranteed to walk away puzzled.The guys vamp over Honda’s new offering in the US, the NC700-X. Is that ABS in your auto-tranny, or are you just happy to be shifting? Yeah, something like that. Anyway, Honda’s new machine looks like the cat’s meow and makes a lot of sense… except for the parts that don’t.

Have you ever wanted to see a KLR as designed by Chuck Norris and Randy “The Macho Man” Savage (he stopped designing Suzukis, after all)…? The Husqvarna Baja (concept) might be just what Ken “The Doctor (of style) Johnson” ordered. Yeah, yeah… that was a stretch, I know. The Baja looks like a seriously badass version of what the KLR and other dirty, dirty dual-sports could be if they’re injected with testosterone and Hulk sweat. Give it a look.

Oh, and speaking of manly… Judge for yourself, the new Victory. It’s lean, it’s pretty, it’s poweful. Dredd it. Ok… ok, I’ll stop now.

The boys round out the show with some feedback, then turn the mics over to Joanne Donn, aka The Gear Chic, to give us some tips on how to shop for gear. These are some great tips and Joanne has a lot of information available. Check out her segment, then peruse her site for more detail. If Joanne survives the Arctic freeze in the great San Francisco tundra, look for future segments from her. The guys chipped in and bought her a kerosene heater from a second hand shop down on Hudson Street, but ya know… UPS just won’t ship kerosene in Harley-branded Coke bottles, so we hope she’ll be OK.

Sadly, we were simply unable to bring you a show this week. However, when we return next week we should be able to discuss our plans for the IMS in NYC this year, a quick weekend jaunt that Chris took on the bike, plans for the future, and of course, all the fun and excitement James and Chris bring to the motorcycle world already! Stay tuned.

We hope everyone had a safe and happy New Year holiday and we’d love to hear feedback from your Christmas holiday – how many of your holiday shopping wish list items made it into your stockings? Merry Christmas!!! Today the guys put down the egg nog (mixed with bourbon, right?) and talk turkey… er… bikes and stuff. It’s their gift to you. Yule love it. Stay present for the whole show. Not to put too fine a poinsettia on things, but the guys wrap up the news, and shepherd the information, while you pine away, waiting to greet the riding season. Jolly & Merry and stuff…

Goodness, that’s just awful.

Anyway, after the news, the guys are dashing into feedback, blitzen their way to the end, then turn off the recorders and enjoy a silent night.

Ugh… horrible. Just terrible.

Brewery information from Christian…
Of course, you can make your destinations breweries. For example, Russian River Brewery in Santa Rosa, California is one of them, with a Travelodge nearby you’ll be able to sample some of the most incredible Belgian’s in the world. Having been to Belgium a few times, that’s saying a lot. Plus you’re in northern California .. the best place in the world to ride a motorcycle.

Another great place in northern Cali is the Eel River brewing company in Fortuna. There are hotels and a campground walking distance. But the best part is that this is where you can launch to some of the best roads in the country – 36, 96, 299, etc or down the coast on 101 to the Avenue of Giants, then to Hwy 1 and Ft. Bragg. There are some incredible roads in this area. We tend to stay in Fortuna a couple nights in a row so we can ditch the luggage and ride loops unencumbered.

Montreal has Dieu De Ciel, and I seem to recall they offer lodging too. But this is all about the beer, and these guys have made some of the best quadrupel I’ve tasted.

Deschutes Brewing Co. in Bend, Oregon is a great stop before or after crossing the desert. Stay at the Old St Francis School too, which is walking distance from the brewpub, and they brew their own as well.

New Glarus, in New Glarus, Wisconsin is near some excellent roads in a swiss village knockoff (note that the Glarner Stube is where you sample the beer and eat german food). Or the Great Dane Brewing Co. in Madison, Wisconsin.

Chris admits that the Concours C-10 isn’t so horrible. Then the guys talk about some information regarding Ethanol. Guess what…? If engines aren’t optimized for alcohol, they’re not as efficient, so using Ethanol fuels in conventional engines just ain’t getting it. Golly… imagine that.

After that, the guys talk about some French blood in Polaris, and what it means. Technology? People? More products? Only Polaris know, and they’re not talking. Well, not to The Pace, any way. But then, we didn’t contact them at all. So yeah…

Oh, look… Bimota releases some new stuff. Ducati on ‘roids? If it’s just a Duc power plant, should we really even be making so many comparisons to Ducati at all? I don’t know. Do you? I don’t. Do you? ‘cause I don’t.

BMW gets less ugly with the newly revamped 800R. Nice(r) looking ride. I mean, it’s no Ducati Indiana, but thank goodness, whatever could be, right?

Also, I’m listening to Sarah Haze while typing this. I discovered her when looking for podsafe music last year some time. Wow, total non-sequitur… just like the story about Ross Technology’s SuperHydroPhobic compound. What in the heck does that mean, and why does it matter to riders? Well, once you see the demo, it’s way more sequitur than you might think. Or something like that. The stuff just throws water off like… uhm… something really water proof. It’s pretty amazing. Just watch the video.

Harley is still in business and shakes up the 2012 lineup a little bit. Nothing terribly startling, but there were a few mild surprises. And Yamaha jumps into the video game / anime / action tv series game with the Ryoku concept bike. Ok, none of that is true. Ruoku was a character in Dragonball-Z, or something. Now it’s a Lego/Erector Set looking concept bike. It actually looks crazy-useful.

And we show you a map of Delaware’s only twisty road, Rt. 82, aka Creek Road. Dragon, schmagon. We’ve got a road that follows a creek. For like 6 miles. It’s got some turns… ya know, there’s no way to spin this. “It’s an awesome road… for being in Delaware.” There. That’ll do.

The guys discuss the local weather lately, and how the strange yellow ball in the sky has finally returned to rain down its lovely light upon us all (or some wacky stuff like that), infusing us all with positive energy, and bringing forth new ways of looking at the sky as a metaphor for life. (somebody stop me)

James also talks about the limits of the Teiz Commute suit in the weather, and then gives us all some information on a few of the farkles he’s added to his bike and smart phone, bringing synergy and convergence to…. ya know, I just don’t really know how to complete that sentence without it sounding like a marketing slogan from some non-descript “business consulting firm” that never really explains what they do and charges you $550 per hour for the convenience of that lack of understanding.

So we’re not going to do that.

Because we can’t charge you.

The guys also talk about the new Honda cross-genre bike being developed for the world market. Since the new machine is named after one of the Acura car models, and Honda being a division of the Honda corporation, we see that synergy taking shape in the form of… wait, sorry… I’m doing it again.

Yamaha cements their place in the 2012 US motorcycle marketplace by redefining market expectations with its strong commitment to legacy and the common paradigm, while envisioning a new tomorrow with… DAMN IT! Stop it. Yeah, Yamaha announces the 2012 models.

BMW taunts us with more electronic wizardry; the question remains, is it the wave of the future, or a continued “nice to have” for the premium product space? Sena pays real attention to the market place, and offers a nice upgrade to the venerable SMH-10 headset for not a whole lot of money.

Scott and I are doing an almost weekly recap of all the MotoGP and WSBK action with some other stuff thrown in every now and again. You can also find it on iTunes.

We’re also looking for questions for a new motorcycle Q&A. Here’s the idea, you send questions, I find a motorcyclist qualified to answer them and then try to talk that person in to jumping on Skype long enough to do just that. Send those questions to james@thepacepodcast.com. This could fail miserably but what the hell, let’s give it a shot.

Is it a “build ‘em where you sell ‘em” thing? Time will tell. The guys talk about an editorial from Motorcycle USA where sport bike enthusiasts thrash a Zumo 50 and have fun doing it! Did Harley really mean to use Brando’s name without permission, or was it just an oversight? Who knows? Not the guys, but that doesn’t stop them from floating some ideas. Fortunately, there’s a new Kawasaki to talk about, and KTM and Bajaj continue to get closer and closer. - Yamaha Motor Corp., U.S.A., (YMUS) and Yamaha Motor Manufacturing Corporation of America (YMMC) announced today that the first production run of new all-terrain vehicle (ATV) models transferred to the U.S. from overseas facilities will take place this month at Yamaha’s state-of-the-art factory in Newnan, Ga.
- The start of new ATV production in Newnan is a major step forward in the companies’ long-term strategy to transfer the majority of Yamaha’s worldwide ATV manufacturing to the United States. When complete, the production transfer could add 200 or more American jobs at Yamaha’s U.S. factory as well as additional jobs at the 125 North American parts supplier companies. The specific ATV models will be announced on June 8 as part of Yamaha’s worldwide unveiling of select 2012 model year products.

Chris promises he didn’t actually steal this FJR from anyone and James tells us about the incredible shrinking Triumph. The guys then go on to disagree with Autoblog and wonder if BMW can compete in the MaxiScooter space. Cluth in, shift into gear, clutch out, give ‘er some gas… er… electrons. That’s right, in Rube Goldberg fashion, it seems that Brammo gives us a transmission with an electric bike attached. Wild, right? And there’s feedback. Lots and lots of feedback. The guys read some, opine some, and read some more. Keep ‘em coming. We think that Chris & James secretly love the attention.

This is the part where we write a little paragraph that tells you what we talked about in this weeks show. And it goes a little somethin’ like this…

Motus is making more noise, Chris got some new stuff, Leicester County in the U.K. is giving away retina burning backpacks and Chip Yeats goes really fast on an electric bike. We got a boat load of feedback from Denver Conway, David Laniuk, Ryan Hettenbach, Brian Medley, Ben Island and Mike Sandler. Thank you all.

We talked a little bit about my review of the Cycle Gear branded knock-offs of the CRG mirrors. That review was written before I moved my page to a new platform and it didn’t survive the transition very well. I’ll post those links once I get it fixed but here’s the big take away: You get what you pay for.

We also talked about what we’re going to talk about next week. We’d really like your help with that. You can find the Craftsman Experience presents Erik Buell Racing video below. What do think all of this means for EBR as it relates to street bikes?

Episode 70: The One Glaring Design Flaw

This week James and Chris discuss “the one glaring design flaw” with James’ new Teiz Commute suit. Turns out, zippers don’t stop water. James has some ideas on a fix. Will he Betsy Ross it into submission and stop the water? Time will tell. Chris also tells us about *gasp* a new jacket. Go figure. This time it’s the Roadgear XTreme 4-season adventure-touring style ¾ jacket. He gives it two thumbs up, so far. Will rain and the coming Summer heat keep the jacket in favor? Time will tell.

It’s Ducati, folks… do they really need to justify a 68% jump in sales? Do they? The guys don’t think so. Sales are up, sales are down. On the down side, Big Dog cycles seems to be riding the falling tide of Custom bike sales. Do all (Big) Dogs really go to Heaven? Time will tell. The town of Sturgis apparently has to pay a nickel every time someone says its name. Federal trademark for the organization that manages the famous bike rally. Will this hold up? Time will te… oh never mind.

Jeff Gilbert lets us know about the “small sport bike” comparison found on SportRider.com. Thomas Hunt talks to us about riding in California, and Jamie Perkins wants to discuss riding in the “danger zone” between newbie and veteran. Where do we all fall in that range? Time will… really, I’ll stop now.
